Kids Haven creates a space for teens

The facility will run as an after-school programme for children between14 and 18.

Kids Haven will soon open the doors of its newly established Teen Hub, which promises to be a one-stop skills development facility for its members.

The facility will run as an after-school programme aimed at helping children between the ages of 14 and 18 hone their skills, assist with homework, offer subject tutoring as well as computer training.

“We want the Teen Hub to be a safe environment for our members,” said Lindiwe Dube, fund-raising assistant.
“It will be a place of self-expression, growth and guidance.”

According to the team, they hope to welcome its first registered members and are excited about the number of activities that will be hosted by knowledgeable volunteers.

The list includes tutoring, reading club, career guidance, public speaking and debate, various musical instruments, drama, dance, various forms of art, and various sports.

“We will also be offering voluntary counselling to our members who feel they may benefit from the process,” she said.

“We do not want the hub to feel like a school environment but rather a recreational centre where they can participate in sports, learn new skills or brush up on their academics. For those in need of emotional support, there will be a safe and confidential space available.”

Although no opening date has been set, the Kids Haven team hope it will be up and running by the second term.
Anyone willing to offer their time and expertise as a volunteer may contact Lerato Tsotetsi at volunteers@kidshaven.co.za.
