Emotional scenes at memorial service for two Lesiba learners

Guests heard how the two friends were inseparable, even up to their last day.

Friends and family members of Njabulo Ndhlebe and Zukiso Majola shared fond memories of the two boys during a heartfelt memorial service held at Lesiba Secondary School on January 18.

Mourners battled to hold back their tears when speakers relived moments they shared with the two deceased.

Majola (16) shot and killed himself after a gun he was playing with went off and killed his friend Ndhlebe (16). This is after they had snuck out of school during break to hang out at Majola’s home on the first day of school (January 12).

During the memorial service, which was attended by district officials and teachers, guests heard how the two friends were inseparable, even up to their last day.

Family, friends, learners, teachers and officials from the Ekurhuleni district gathered at Lesiba Secondary school on January 18 to celebrate the lives of Njabulo Ndhlebe and Zukiso Majola. The two leaners died in a shooting tragedy on January 12.

One of the teachers shared how Majola would skip her class just to be with Ndhlebe in another class. She shared how excited Ndhlebe was to begin Grade 10 when she saw him on the morning of the incident.

Family spokesperson Sibusiso Nkabane said both families are drawing strength from God and are united by love during their grief.

“This tragedy has taught us to value life and understand how valuable life is,” said Nkabane.

Ekurhuleni education district director Busi Luthuli praised both families for embracing each other under such circumstances.

Speaking to the City Times after the service, Luthuli clarified that the pair managed to leave school on the day under the pretense that they were Grade Nines because apparently the Grade Nines had come to the school to collect stationery only.
