Organisation brings cheer to Daveyton families

The organisation has been helping the community even during the height of Covid-19.

The Samukelo Esihle Community Project brought Christmas cheer to 500 families in Daveyton after donating food parcels to homes headed by elderly people and those living with disability in December.

The organisation has continued to bring smiles to these people’s faces in the new year.

“From the start of December to Christmas, we donated food parcels to members of this community.

“Our sponsors have also continued to help us this year and thus we have also continued where we left off in December and have been donating to our grannies and members of this organisation who are disabled,” said the organisation’s chairperson, Samukelo Tshabalala.

The organisation looks after 110 grandmothers and 20 people with disabilities.

“The grannies come here from Monday to Friday to exercise. After their training, we offer them healthy food to keep their health in check.

“We always overemphasise the need for them to exercise because they are stressed out and suffer from various illnesses. So, they come here to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

“This place offers them an escape from their daily reality. This is a space where they can meet their peers, talk freely about any problems they may face at home and most importantly, to open up and be themselves.”

The organisation has donated wheelchairs and walking sticks to people with disabilities.

Tshabalala has encouraged members of the community who may need a wheelchair or walker to come forward.

“We still have wheelchairs, which we are still going to give away to members of this community who are living with disabilities and need a wheelchair.”

The organisation received an award from the Department of Social Development in 2021 and Tshabalala said this was a demonstration of the great job they are doing for the community.

After their kitchen was vandalised last year, Tshabalala explained that they have been struggling to cook for their members.

She has asked for help to rebuild the kitchen as her wish for 2022 is to cook every day for the organisation’s members.

“Our kitchen has been vandalised so we want to get help to fix it because most of our events last year failed as we couldn’t cook enough food.

“I want to cook every day for the grannies who come here for exercising, so any help to fix the kitchen will be appreciated.”
