Civic funeral for former mayor

Duma Nkosi lost his battle against cancer on December 16 at the age of 64.

The former Ekurhuleni Mayor, Duma Nkosi, whose tenure in the metro was from 2001 to 2008, lost his battle against cancer on December 16 at the age of 64.

City of Ekurhuleni councillors converged for an meeting on December 21 to consider granting Nkosi a civic funeral.

The request for a civic funeral, brought by the ANC caucus, was approved in council and the party thanked the council for affording Nkosi a civic funeral.

The speaker of council, Raymond Dlamini, expressed his deepest sympathy to the Nkosi family, his colleagues and fellow compatriots on the loss of a dignified and perceptive leader.

“Former Mayor Duma Nkosi served with humility and left an indelible mark in the hearts of the people of Thokoza and the City. He showed great tolerance in managing conflict and always put the interest of the people before all else,” said Dlamini.

Nkosi was described as an outstanding community developer, a visionary and a symbol of great leadership, who made an immense contribution that laid a solid foundation for service delivery, development and the progressive improvement of the quality of life for the residents of Ekurhuleni.

According to the office of the speaker of council, Nkosi was renowned for his courage and a passion for improving the livelihoods of the people.

Nkosi served in various prominent senior positions, including MP from 1994 until 2001 and returning in 2019.

He was the president of SALGA and the first president of the South African Commercial Catering Union.
