Though most people imagine lions or elephants as animals to watch out for, even small mammals can pose a risk.

Here are some tips from Netcare on how to assess a run-in with a wild animal:
• Avoid animals that might behave strangely.
• Stay connected. Be sure to pack your phone so you can call for help if needed.
• Be aware that even the cubs of animals can easily injure you.
• Teach your children about safety around animals, wild or not.
• If going on a game drive, discuss the route with family or other passengers and map it out.
• Keep your distance from wild animals.
• When in nature, be aware of your surroundings.
• Maintain a safe distance from riverbanks.
• Consider wearing protective clothing such as snake protection.
• Always have a first-aid kit handy for unforeseen injuries and illnesses.
