NPOs create awareness about HIV/Aids

People were encouraged to continue taking their medication at the World Aids Day event.

HIV and Aids is no longer a death sentence; however, the diagnosis is not something to be taken lightly.

This was the message spread by local NPOs from Daveyton when they commemorated World Aids Day on December 1.

The Kamohelo Community Development Centre together with Entokozweni Drop-in Centre,

Resegofaditswe Main and Extension Drop-in Centre and Nomcebo Home-based Care marched from Sinaba Stadium to Mayfield Square to create awareness.

The NPOs wore white clothes and held red candles to remember those who have died from the illness and those affected by it.

Kamohelo Community Development Centre founder and project manager Joy Morotolo said through the march, they also wanted to encourage those who are HIV positive to continue taking their treatment and not use Covid-19 as an excuse when they have to collect their medication.

“It is important to continue taking your medication while eating healthily and exercising regularly,” said Morotolo.

“The focus has shifted from HIV/Aids to Covid-19. The HIV stats are increasing and we encourage residents to make use of our services, free counselling is available at these NPOs and we will also try our best to assist when someone needs help.”

Entokozweni Dropping Centre project manager Nosisa Hlebo said it is important to remember those who died from HIV and remind those who are living with the virus to live better as it is not the end of the world.
