Derby win for Northerns on home ground

Sibusiso Masina of Old Bens reserves scored a cracking free-kick, putting them 1-0 up in the first half.

All roads led to Northerns Sports Grounds on October 23 for the eagerly anticipated clash between Benoni’s best Old Bens versus Northerns – first teams and reserves.

Perfect summer weather and good support on the stands made this an epic affair, with Northerns taking the win in both games.

The Northerns first team beat Old Bens 2-1 and the reserves won 3-1.

“Derby days are most special for the players, coaching staff and fans, the weather played its part too. It has been a glorious day for spectators but very hot for the players,” said coaches Len, George and Enrique.

“As expected, we had our biggest crowd of the season with lots of fun banter from both sets of fans. We thank them for coming down to watch, contributing to such a good atmosphere and sporting behaviour. I hope they enjoyed the football show and cold beverages.

“Derby matches are most tough and competitive encounters with lots of tension, this one was no different.

“The Benoni Northerns coaching staff are most proud of their squad. To do the double over our noisy neighbours from down the road is a good feeling.

“We would like to thank our opponents for the most competitive game but played in good spirits. Old Bens have a very good squad and are a formidable team. Good luck, until we meet again next season.”

Although their teams didn’t walk away with the win, Old Bens firsts and reserves put up a fight.
Sibusiso Masina of Old Bens reserves scored a cracking free-kick, putting Old Bens reserves one-nil up in the first half and according to Clint Nourse, reserves coach for Old Bens, moments after he should have had a second goal with a volley that rattled the crossbar.

“It was a game of two halves where Old Bens dominated the first half and Northerns the second. It was a well-contested game with both teams battling hard.

“Old Bens are extremely disappointed having missed so many good chances at the goal and not putting the game to bed in the first half. It was a tough loss for us but a big motivation for next year,” said Nourse.

After Saturday’s game, Northerns are fourth in the cross border super league on 47 points just below the likes of Robertsham, Alberton and Luso, with Old Bens lying fifth on 37 points.
