Thousands already vaccinated at Daveyton main clinic

The clinic offers walk-in vaccinations as well as a drive-through where one does not have to leave their vehicle.

The Benoni City Times visited the Daveyton main clinic and its vaccination site recently.

Journalist Jemma Pringle not only enjoyed her sit down with the clinic’s vaccine coordinator, Lunga Mnyakeni, but she also opted to get her first shot of the Pfizer vaccine at the same time.

This vaccine site first opened on May 17 this year and since then, has vaccinated 41 708 people.

“When we first opened, we had about 800 people getting vaccinated per day,” he explained.

“Since then, we have started dropping and are now at 300 to 400 people per day. I don’t know if it’s because the youth is scared or anti-vaccine but there has been a major drop since we started.”

Since Jemma wanted to also get her vaccine done, she asked what the difference between the Pfizer and Johnson&Johnson vaccines was.

“The Pfizer vaccine requires two doses and the J&J only requires one,” explained Lunga.

“Many people already know this but struggle to understand. Pfizer’s first shot has a 65% efficacy (the ability to produce a desired or intended result) and the second shot has a 95% efficacy. J&J is 85% and only has one shot.

“Therefore, we can already see that Pfizer has a better efficacy rate. Plus, most countries have not approved the J&J vaccine, so if you want to travel and get the J&J, some countries will not allow you into their country. Pfizer has also been stated to have a better fight ethic against the Delta virus strain.”

The clinic offers walk-in vaccinations, as well as a drive-through where one does not have to leave their vehicle.

“At the moment, we don’t have stock on the J&J vaccine,” said Lunga.

“When we do have stock on the J&J, we mostly host campaigns around Daveyton, such as the Daveyton Mall and Mayfield Centre to encourage people to get the vaccine.

“It’s a bit easier for most people as well because if they are shopping or working at those centres, they can come and vaccinate on a lunch break.”

The vaccination site opens at 8:00 and closes at 15:00 Monday to Friday. One can expect a 30-minute waiting period for either a walk-in or a drive-through, at most.
