Shaking hands with Donald Trump

The photo was taken at the Trump Plaza, where they were both staying at the time of The Hammer's world title fight against Mark Breland in 1987.

Former Benoni resident and South African welterweight champion Harold Volbrecht (65), or The Hammer, came across an old photo of him shaking hands with Donald Trump (75).

The photo was taken at the Trump Plaza, where they were both staying at the time of The Hammer’s world title fight against Mark Breland in 1987.

In June 1976, and in only his seventh fight, Volbrecht won the vacant white South African welterweight title when he beat Gert Craemer on points over 12 rounds in Pretoria.

Now living in Bartlett, Boksburg, this well-known boxer still reminisces the good old days, which is why when his daughter shared this photo on Facebook, the City Times felt it was only right to share his story with Benoni.

Harold lived in Benoni from 1976 until he moved to Bartlett in 2007, with his first home being in Rynfield, then later Lakefield and finally built a home at Oakmont Mews, Benoni Country Club, where he stayed until his relocation to Boksburg.

According to his daughter, Una, Harold has been asked many times to ghostwrite a book on his career, as a trainer and boxer, as his wealth of knowledge and many funny stories need to be told.

Stay tuned to the City Times over the next two weeks as we look forward to contacting The Hammer and hopefully sharing his story.
