Metro will use R200 000 this financial year to rename roads

The Ekurhuleni metro began the process of renaming municipal roads and facilities on May 10.

There is R200 000 in the 2020/2021 budget available to “kickstart” the roll-out, according to metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini. 

When this money is depleted, he said, the signage project will continue under the 2022/2023 budget, but he could not specify how much money would be allocated in that financial year, or how many years the project will take to be finalised. 

The metro adopted the renaming of geographical features during its sitting on February 21, 2019, and the changes were approved in September that year.

At  the time, the metro said the process of naming and renaming many landmark features was to bring honour and pride to the residents of Ekurhuleni.

The new names will be processed by the office of the surveyor-general and, once approved, the metro’s planning department will put these names on the GIS map and then the Roads and Storm Water Department will install the signage.

Unfortunately for the metro, the first temporary new sign board erected on Atlas Road (renamed to Solomon Jefferson Mahlangu) contained a spelling error (Solomon was spelt Soloman), but the metro has subsequently replaced the signage with the correct spelling.  

The following streets will be renamed:

• Etwatwa (N12) – Oscar Mabika
• Daveyton (Kingsway Road) (N12) – Richard Mhlongo
• Tom Jones Road (N12) – Amina Cachalia.
• Atlas Road (N12) – Solomon Jefferson Mahlangu
• Voortrekker Road (Kempton Park – R21) – Amon Ngulele.
• M2/Germiston – Geldenhuys Interchange (N3) – Bavumile Vilakazi.
• Alberton (N12/N17) – Chris Hani.
• Rietfontein Road (N12) – Chris Dlamini
• Exit Route: Tonk Meter Road (N17) – Congress Skhumbuzo Mtsweni

• Germiston Civic Centre – OR Tambo Government Precinct.
