Local fights for her place in CrossFit Open

Huntington is hoping to qualify for the semi-finals.

Life The Glynnwood radiology staff member and B4C Fit Factory athlete Kerri Huntington recently competed in the Nobull CrossFit Games Open virtually and then succeeded in being selected for the individual quarterfinals that took place in April, as well as the masters quarter-finals that take place now in May, which she won’t be taking part in due to a second injury.

“CrossFit is a big community and it’s so nice to see the athletes get together to push and motivate one another,” she said.

“I am so very happy with my placing, we always feel we could do better but honestly I am happy with the way this competition is going.”

She placed overall 20th in South Africa in the Open Ladies 35 to 39 category.
The Open hasn’t been easy for Huntington, as she slashed open her shin during her second workout.

“In the workout 21.2, I hit the corner of the box and slashed my shin very deep but, I managed to finish the workout in 15 minutes 11 seconds, having it stitched that afternoon.”

Huntington was hoping to qualify for the semi-finals but due to another injury had to pull out for the remainder of the competition.

“They take only a few worldwide so the chances of making it in there are normally very slim, but now with this new injury I had to pull out completely, which is devastating.”

But, Huntington enjoyed every minute of the Open and individual quarter-finals.

“The team environment and the number of people that came together to motivate and encourage one another was amazing, this is a team sport,” she said.

“It is physically and mentally challenging but such a rewarding programme to take part in along with so many amazing people.

“I think no matter where we are or how well we do things we always want to do our best, but the workouts are released just before the start of the workout so you cannot prepare for it, you just have to be ready for whatever comes your way.”

Huntington, what are your plans for 2020?

When the City Times last spoke with Huntington, her pacemaker had been turned off and she was looking forward to having it removed.

“Unfortunately, the doctor was not comfortable with it having been left off or removed,” she said.

“He felt it was safer to have it on if it ever needed to work, so in turn he switched the pacemaker back on and it was decided that it would stay in and on for good.”

Huntington has also received some fantastic news regarding new sponsorship.

“I have been so lucky, I have just jumped on board along with Stiaan Rass, and I am being sponsored by SAF Fitness Supplements and Online Training Programs,” she said.

“They really are a great brand and I am very thankful to have a great team behind me.

“I can only thank every single person that has been there through my training and Opens, to the positive people that really see me through, I have the best support structure and I am truly grateful for the amazing people in my life.”
