Couple released on bail in insurance fraud case

The couple was arrested on March 24 in connection with a case of house break-in and theft they reported at their home in Northmead Extension Four last year.

The Benoni police have issued a warning to perpetrators of fraudulent cases that they will be caught and prosecuted.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said members of the public must not take chances because the police will leave no stone unturned to get to the truth as fraudulent cases waste valuable resources.

This comes after a 26-year-old man and his girlfriend were released on R3 000 bail each on charges of fraud and defeating the ends of justice in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court.

They are due back in court on May 11.

The couple was arrested on March 24 in connection with a case of house break-in and theft they reported at their home in Northmead Extension Four last year.

Sekele said the man claimed that he went to buy food on August 4 and when he returned he found his gate and living room door open.

“He claimed that various items had been stolen, including a BMW motorcycle,” she said.

“The man claimed from his insurance for the theft of the motorbike.”

In August 2020, the case was assigned to Det Sgt Donavan Naicker after a docket was registered at the station.

In January, Naicker found evidence that the motorcycle was sold and that the insurance claim was fraudulent.

It was discovered that that the girlfriend advertised the motorcycle on social media and they had found a buyer.

However, they cannot reveal when it was shared on social media due to the ongoing investigation.

The duo was then arrested and charged in March.
