“The Benoni team was again well-organised and well-supported by various security companies, including Snipr LPR, ER24 and our local patrollers and members,” said Etienne de Klerk, AfriForum deputy chair and deputy head of safety.

“The main purpose of these mass patrols are to show the criminal elements, as well as to reassure our local communities that we stand in solidarity with local law-enforcement agencies and security companies by being the eyes and ears in town, whilst operating within the parameters as set out by the law.

“We are here to keep them safe.”

The Afriforum offices in Northmead operated the joint operational control (JOC) room, where the activities and progress of all community crime groups, Snipr and other groups were monitored throughout the evening to ensure that members were safe during their patrols.

The JOC was also in constant communication with members to enable them to quickly respond to any reported events or incidents.

“The event was very well planned and well-executed,” said de Klerk.

“It makes me feel proud to be a member of such a well-organised and supportive structure.”
Benoni SAPS Colonel Ndaba, Vispol commander, wrote a thank you letter to AfriForum the following morning.

“Good morning colleagues, thank you to all who took part in the mass patrols, it had a huge impact on the prevention of crime in Benoni. Except for one dead person found next to Snake Road, we had no other incidents reported. Thanks again guys, keep it up.”
