Benoni achievers bags Pitje Academic Excellence Awards

The top six best-performing learners received the executive mayor’s GM Pitje honorary awards, which include a full bursary and laptop prizes.

The Ekurhuleni metro hosted the 2021 GM Pitje Academic Excellence Awards on March 10 at the Germiston Civic Centre, with only the recipients of the awards and key council officials in attendance.

“While the pandemic impacted the rate of matric passes, as well as the quality of the passes, learners and schools in our province were able to perform exceptionally well,” said the City’s executive mayor, Mzwandile Masina.

“Although the overall district performance declined, all districts in the province achieved above the national average.”

Karabo Motloung, a Grade 12 learner at Gekombineerde Skool Noorderlig, was the programme director on the day as she is the junior speaker for the Ekurhuleni Junior City Council.

Karabo said it was an honour to be part of the event and she was inspired to work hard so she can also be one of the award recipients next year.

Academic Excellence Awards Benoni results are:

• Top 10 best-performing high schools from priority school areas: Unity Secondary School (second place) and Lesiba Secondary School (fourth place).

• Top 10 best-performing high schools: Benoni High School, fourth place.

• Most-improved schools: Gekombineerde Skool Noorderlig, fourth place.

• Best-performing learner in business studies and accounting: Sifiso Ntikane (Etwatwa Secondary School).

• Best-performing learners from priority school areas: Sifiso Ntikane (Etwatwa Secondary School).

• Best-performing matric learners overall: Layla Germishuys (first place, Hoërskool Brandwag), Ruan Roodt (second place, Hoërskool Brandwag), Maliha Carrim (seventh place, Benoni Muslim School) and Jacques Pieterse (13th place, Hoërskool Brandwag).

• Best-performing matric learners from priority schools: Sifiso Ntikane (third place, Etwatwa Secondary School) and Sphetho Martica Buthelezi (13th place, HB Nyathi Secondary School).
