Lake Lions Club and MedeQuip donate to Operation Brightsight

The Club also received a donation of an ophthalmic examination chair which they placed at the facility in Benoni.

The Benoni Lakes Lions Club through MedeQuip, a supplier of medical equipment, donated an Icare Tonometer to Lions Operation Brightsight on March 1.

The Club also received a donation of an ophthalmic examination chair which they placed at the facility in Benoni.

Lions Operation Brightsight, a project of Lions Clubs throughout South Africa, enables clubs to assist those who are not in a financial position to afford the normal costs of an eye test and glasses.

Frames are recycled and spectacles are made to suit the individual patient’s prescription.

Benoni Lakes Lions Club recently donated an examination chair to Lions Operation BrightSight. Seen here are Lake Lions member Diane Townsend and Beaulieu Maré (president).

The Operations Manager at MedeQuip, Nicolé Hendry, said through their close relationship with the Benoni Lakes Lions, they became aware of the need for a pressure test at the facility and they decided to help as a way of giving back to the community.

MedeQuip MD Quenton Greene explained the Icare Tonometer from Finland tests the pressure of the eye.

“The normal pressure of the eye should be between 10 and 20 and if the pressure is too high the tonometer will alert the optometrist for further investigations,” said Greene.

“It is a diagnostic device to see if the pressures of the eyes are in correct range because if the pressure is high it could be glaucoma disease and the patient will need to be referred to an eye specialist.”

Green said this device is important because it is part of the primary screening and it is part of the optometrist’s scope of practice.

“This device will assist the centre with the service they provide as it is easy and quick to use,” he said.

“You can test the patient’s eyes in 30 seconds and the turnaround time is quicker than the old traditional tonometer.”

One of the optometrists who assist Brightsight, Hajra Mabood, said the device will now allow her to make the diagnosis quicker without having to send the results to an eye specialist.

Benoni Lakes Lions Club president Beaulieu Maré said they thank MedeQuip for their generosity and ongoing support to the Benoni Lakes Lions Club.

“This donation ensures that our commitment as Knights of the Blind in the crusade against darkness is more meaningful, and we are making a difference to our community,” said Maré.

Anyone who require assistance with spectacles or wish to know more about the Benoni Lakes Lions Club may contact Maré on 082 971 5472.
