Benoni schools are proud of their matric results

The overall mood for the Benoni matriculants was ecstatic as they celebrated their achievements.

Despite challenges with lockdown, the Class of 2020 achieved an overall pass rate of 76.2 percent.

The overall mood for the Benoni matriculants was ecstatic as they celebrated their achievements.

Below is a breakdown of some of the schools’ performances:

Unity Secondary School
2020: 90.88 per cent
2019: 90.87 percent
Number of learners: 340
Number of distinctions: 159.
Deputy principal Buyile Zondo said they had a tough year but they tried their best.
“Due to the pandemic, we had poor attendance from the learners at the beginning when they returned to school.
“The work ethics here at the school, morning and afternoon classes were attended by the teachers even though the situation was bad. When learners couldn’t catch up on their work, we made means to always assist them,” said Zondo.
“Our teachers are committed and this year we will definitely get a 100 per cent pass rate. The kick start we had will take us to that pass rate. We have adjusted to Covid-19.”

Ashbury International College
2020: 27 learners passed and one failed
2019: 98 percent
Number of learners: 28
Number of distinctions: 26.
Head of the school Cecil Behrens said they are proud of the achievement of their matrics. It was a very unusual year and a difficult year for the learners and teachers.
“I think we actually came out with flying colours. The results are better than we expected, taking the circumstances into consideration,” said Behrens.
“The one learner who failed suffered a great trauma last year when a parent died due to Covid-19, so it was unexpected.”

Noorderlig Gekombineerde Skool
2020: 88.65 per cent
2019: 72.11 per cent
Number of learners: 97
Number of distinctions: 12.
Principal Frikkie Smith said the school had an improvement of 16.54 per cent, and he is very proud of the learners and the teachers for their dedication and hard work despite the pandemic.

Liverpool Secondary School
2020: 76.6 per cent
2019: 81.3 per cent
Number of learners: 233
Number of distinctions: 67.
Principal Navin Ramsunder said he was disappointed with the results. However, under the circumstances many learners were unable to gain access to an internet connection to benefit from online learning.
“The time learners spent at school was limited. I am pleased that 40 per cent of my learners obtained bachelor’s degree passes.”

Willowmoore High School
2020: 94.3 per cent
2019: 94.6 per cent
Number of learners: 176
Number of distinctions: 77.
Principal Lorna Sanders said she is very pleased with the results and is proud of all the matric learners.

Benoni High School
2020: 99.3 per cent
2019: 99.6 per cent
Number of learners: 278
Number of distinctions: 171.
Principal Dr GE Rooyakkers said he is very pleased with the 2020 matric results, considering the extremely difficult circumstances the learners had to endure.

Hoërskool Hans Moore
2020: 88.5 per cent
2019: 92.1 per cent
Number of learners: 114
Number of distinctions: 81.
Principal JH Hattingh said he is proud of the matric learners.
“Congratulations to all our matriculants,” said Hattingh.
“These results are even more remarkable when we factor in the bizarre circumstances and pressure under which these learners had to not only sit the examination, but also perform and in many cases exceed expectations. We wish our learners the best of luck as they embark on the next chapter of their lives. I would also like to thank our staff for all their hard work and encouragement towards our learners.”

Hoërskool Brandwag
2020: 98.56 per cent
2019: 99.31 per cent
Number of learners: 139
Number of distinctions: 92.
Principal James Wright said: “We are very proud despite the circumstances of Covid-19. We had five children who received seven distinctions. We are also encouraging the two children who did not pass to rewrite their exams.”

Belvedere School
2020: 23 passed, one is awaiting final results
2019: 100 per cent
Number of learners: 24.
Principal Hannes du Plessis said: “We are very proud of our learners. Both the teachers and learners put in several hours of dedication. I am thankful to the teachers for their effort and we are all thankful for the results.”

Benoni Muslim School
2020: 98 per cent
2019: 96 per cent
Number of learners: 43
Number of distinctions: 55.
Principal MY Laher said: “Covid-19 had created unprecedented disruption to teaching and learning for the matriculants of 2020. It was pleasing to note the dedication and commitment of our Grade 12 educators to combine both online and face-to-face learning to ensure our high standards have been maintained. I wish to congratulate our matriculants who have sailed through the odds to produce excellent results. It just proves that when the going gets tough, the tough get going.”

NOTE: BMS does not send photos of their learners who received five distinctions or more due to religious beliefs which has been implemented into the school’s policy, however, learners are allowed to send their photos directly to the City Times should they wish to have it published.
