Abandoned metro sports centre

The centre was originally built for tennis, but the sport within the whole of Ekurhuleni, according to the Ekurhuleni metro, has seen a sharp decline in membership.

The Benoni Sports Council centre, based in Newlands Avenue and owned by the Ekurhuleni metro, has been abandoned for quite some time.

A resident called in enquiring about the centre as they would like to use it in the mornings.

“The centre has been vacant for a considerable amount of time and there is no club that is using it,” said Nhlanhla Cebekhulu, metro’s divisional head of communication and media relations.

Locals have been complaining that there has been no maintenance done on the centre in a long time and it’s looking terrible.

“We are aware of the state of the centre, and a relevant city department will conduct maintenance,” said Cebekhulu.

The centre was originally built for tennis, but the sport within the whole of Ekurhuleni, according to the metro, has seen a sharp decline in membership.

“This has resulted in various tennis facilities being vacated.

“There is a process within the [Ekurhuleni metro] to use the centre for a different sporting code,” Cebekhulu explained.
