Crystal Park SAPS has a veggie garden to help feed residents

The aim of this project is to also encourage the elder and the youth to start their own gardens in their communities or homes.

Crystal Park Vispol commander Capt Diboga Zulu, together with Tumelo Mkhonto, a victim supporter, and Andile April, a volunteer, started a vegetable garden at the station to help fight poverty in the community.

The commander and the two volunteers have been working tirelessly in the garden for the past three months to change the lives of the people who visit their Victim Empowerment Centre (VEC) and to also assist those who are in need in the community.

The aim of this project is to also encourage the elder and the youth to start their own gardens in their communities or homes.

Mkhonto said this is also to encourage the youth to consider pursuing a career in agriculture.

“We also want to grow more vegetables so they can be donated to the elderly as they are more vulnerable,” he said.

The commander said he saw the need for the garden as there are a lot of people who visit the station and some of them are from disadvantaged backgrounds and don’t even have food at home.

The garden yields spinach, potatoes, lettuce, beetroot, cabbage and tomatoes.

April said the garden will also promote healthy living within the community, especially now during the pandemic.
The trio plan to make this garden a sustainable project.

They would appreciate a donation of seeds so they can have a bigger garden. To donate, contact Mkhonto on 063 695 4610.
