The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) SWAT/Intervention and Anti High Speed Units officers arrested six male suspects recently for being in possession of a reported hijacked/robbed motor vehicle and ignoring the regulated speed limit.

In Benoni the EMPD Anti-High Speed Unit officers arrested four drivers for failing to adhere to speed limits.

“Three speedsters facing charges of reckless and negligent driving aged 29, 42 and 50, driving sedans and Special Utility Vehicles (SUV), were [arrested] at the corner of Kingsway and Main Reef roads which is zoned 80km/h, for registering 120, 157 and 163km/h respectively, alleging to be late for work, rushing to shopping malls and late for a flight,” EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng said.

“[In another incident] the EMPD SWAT Unit officers on patrol, made an attempt to stop a suspicious black VW Polo with two male occupants in Senderwood/Linksfield area, on the N3 freeway direction north by Moddefontein off-ramp.

“While in pursue, the hatch-back displaying Malawian registration/number plates were tested and officers learned that it was reported hijacked/robbed from the owner in July this year, somewhere in Duduza area.

“With more back-up responding, the VW with the license disc not corresponding with number plates was cornered in Johannesburg area, at an intersection of Polly and Pritchard where the 29-year-old driver, along with a 33-year-old passenger were apprehended.

“The pair facing charges of ‘possession of hijacked/robbed motor vehicle/car’ and failing to stop when instructed by police officers in uniform, [taken to the] Johannesburg Central Police Station and the recovered VW Polo, was impounded for safekeeping, at the Aeroton police yard.”
