Martial Fitness boxers win White Collar matches

All three Benoni boxers took on their opponents, walking away with two wins.

Recently, Martial Fitness in Northmead put forward three fighters for a White Collar boxing event at Apex in Sandton.

All three Benoni boxers took on their opponents, walking away with two wins.

They are looking forward to next year and what is to come.

Victoria Welthagen, Miss Benoni 2016, dropped her opponent in the first 16 seconds.

“The highlight of the fight for me was the moment I dropped my opponent in the first round. I enjoyed every second of the match,” she said.

Welthagen fought against Nicole Bessick (The Bone Collector), who is a well-known mixed martial arts fighter.

“The moment that I will remember for the rest of my life was the heart to heart moment I had with my dad before I walked out,” she said.

“I appreciated also having Jesse (coach) and my dad walk me out.

“Honestly, having the most amazing coach in my corner and having my friends and family there just made the win so much more thrilling. I am grateful for you all.

“The best piece of advice I got was from Jesse. He always tells me: ‘You can do this, you’re tougher than you think, you’re not made of glass’,” she concluded.

Joshua Denman, a Northmead resident, said the highlight for him was to be able to proudly represent his gym.

“I really enjoyed trading punches with my opponent and showing off my gym.

“I am looking forward to my next fight, which will be in January.

“One quote I always live by is: ‘If you are afraid don’t do it, but if you are doing it don’t be afraid,’ by Genghis Khan,” he said.

Tyrone Schaper, an Atlasville resident, said he enjoyed promoting the gym and witnessing the wins.

“The highlight of my day was seeing Martial Fitness represent three fighters and walk away with two wins and a massive point proven by the team.

“The highlight of my fight was landing my first shot and seeing my opposition’s legs wobble and moving in to finish the fight, and at the end when the referee lifted my hand up for the win.

“I fully believe you need to train hard to fight easy.

“I am hopefully fighting again on January 5 and if not, then in February, but I will fight again,” he concluded.

Jesse Schaper, coach to all three fighters, is incredibly proud of what they achieved on the day.

“Performance wise, all of them performed exactly how I wanted them too.

“Victoria’s drop in the first round was crazy, unbelievable and just came out of nowhere. It was amazing to watch.

“It was Tyrone and Victoria’s first matches and I was so impressed with how hard they pushed.

“Tyrone put on an amazing boxing performance. He showcased his skill and had solid jabs. He is just an all-round solid boxer.

“Josh is quite a veteran.

The opponent he had was abnormally tall for his weight class, so Josh had a bit of a puzzle to solve, but I think he solved it very well.

“All in all, I think all three fights were a win for the gym. All I wanted them to do was give it their all, and that’s exactly what they did.

“I am very proud of them. They put in the hard work and effort, cut the weight even though they didn’t have too. It was just fantastic to see, and all of them had professional performances.

“I can’t wait to see what they do in their upcoming fights,” he concluded.
