Benoni SPCA needs help to care for seven new Huskies

Residents can deposit donations into the organisation's bank account (FNB account number 54475778429) using “husk” as a reference or SMS SPCA to 49040, which will cost R15 per SMS.

The Benoni SPCA is appealing to the public to donate towards the welfare of seven huskies that were surrendered to the organisation by their owner in Crystal Park on November 19.

The SPCA responded to the complaint accompanied by the Crystal SAPS on November 18, as they had no warrant at the time.

Upon inspection, it was found the huskies were being kept in unacceptable conditions.

According to SPCA inspector Oageng Mosito, the animals appeared malnourished as their pelvic and rib bones were showing.

“Huskies are large, confident dogs but these did not not even wag their tails.

“We also noticed some of the animals’ noses were dry, which is not a good sign. The vet report will determine the extent of neglect and health issues,” Mosito said.

He added the owner became defensive, especially after it was discovered the original pack of dogs had consisted of eight huskies.

The body of the eighth dog – which had apparently been killed by the rest of the pack – was dug up in the garden by the SPCA inspector in order for a post-mortem to be conducted.

“Expecting problems from the owner, we obtained a warrant and returned the following day with a police escort.

“Once the owner was confronted by the SPCA and SAPS, he opted to surrender all seven huskies to the Benoni SPCA,” said Mosito.

The dogs were taken for veterinary assessment and on the advice of the veterinarian, the animals need to be slowly nourished to a normal weight.

The SPCA has put all seven dogs on a rice and chicken diet, as the dogs will need careful feeding and assessment over the following weeks to avoid any further health issues.

The organisation expressed its gratitude to those who answered the call to help with donations towards the care of the huskies.

Residents can deposit donations into the organisation’s bank account (FNB account number 54475778429) using “husk” as a reference or SMS SPCA to 49040, which will cost R15 per SMS.
