Former Benonian needs your vote to be named best female artist at the SAHHA

MsSupa is passionate about women empowerment and that of young minds.

Former Benoni resident Ayanda Malele, known as MsSupa, needs your vote to be named Best Female Artist at the South African Hip-Hop Awards (SAHHA).

The award ceremony will be held on December 3 and voting will close on November 26.

The 37-year-old said winning the award would be a pat on the back from the universe.

“I’ve been rapping since 1996 and pushed hip-hop before it was cool, and way before females were taken seriously. So my whole career has been about me trying to bring up the voice of females in hip-hop,” she said.

She has been in the industry for over 15 years.

“I have had some great milestones in my career, such as being the first female rapper to appear on Hype Magazine, to working with musical legends such as HHO.”

Having been interested in performance from an early age, this led her to plan talent shows for cousins and neighbours from the tender age of 7.

The mother of two said what she loves about the music industry is the fact that hip-hop is growing as a genre and the emergence of more female rappers in the industry.

“What I don’t like is that the people with the keys to open doors keep them for a few people and diversity is not celebrated,” said MsSupa.

Her fondest memory of staying in Benoni is that as a young girl, you could ride your bike anywhere, alone, without being scared.

“I used to find any cypher around Benoni to meet and share with like-minded people. Our favourite spot was the Benoni Library; those stairs are nostalgic for me. It’s where it all really started.”

MsSupa is passionate about women empowerment and that of young minds.

She owns a record label called The Undiscovered Brand and released singles such as Mshove featuring celebrated CapCity rappers, such as Blaklez and PDotO.
