Netball is what she knows and loves

She also received a sporting excellence award that inspired her to work harder in netball.

Former Farrarmere resident Alice Kennon (19) competed with her team (the Jaguars) in the Telkom Netball League (TNL) on October 14.

Her team took home the title and she couldn’t be more excited.

“It was such an amazing experience that really developed me as a player and helped me gain the experience of playing at such a high level of netball,” Kennon explained.

“I didn’t end up winning any individual awards but my team did defend their title.”

It had always been a dream of Kennon’s to be a part of the team and to play in the TNL.

“It was my first year playing in the TNL and I was fortunate enough to be in the team that I wanted,” she said.
Kennon began her school career at Ashton International College before moving to Farrarmere Primary School.

“I got involved in netball because my mom and my big sister played netball and I wanted to be just like them,” she said.

“I played for fun during my first few years of school but really got into the sport when I joined Farrarmere.”

She then attended Benoni High School for two years but moved to St Dunstan’s College in Grade 10, where she matriculated.

“I played netball in the winter season and rowed in the summer season while at high school. I also did a bit of athletics.”

The St Dunstan’s matriculant said she enjoys a range of sports and would never hesitate to try something new but always tended to gravitate towards team sports.

While in school Kennon received her honours blazer for netball.

“This award really meant a lot to me as it was an integral part in helping me realise my potential as a player and that I could, in fact, take this sport further than high school.”

She also received a sporting excellence award that inspired her to work harder in netball.

“I wanted to be able to achieve more and do more with the talent that I was given. Being chosen for the SA u-21 top 30 was also a wonderful achievement that made me want to work harder to hopefully compete in the youth world championship next year.”

Kennon plays both indoor and outdoor netball.

“I started playing indoor in Grade Nine with my mom’s indoor team, which for a 15-year-old was quite daunting,” she said.

“I made a lot of mistakes which really helped me learn and grow as a player but in the end it solidified my love for netball.”

Kennon recently moved to Pretoria to attend The University of Pretoria.

She feels that without her support system she wouldn’t be where she is today.

“My support system consists of my family and friends, specifically my mom but my stepdad, my aunt and uncle, my high school coaches and my best friends also play a huge role in my journey.”
