No date for Bunny Park

The upgrading of the Bunny Park in Pretoria Road is complete; however, due to “operational and administrative processes still pending”, the Ekurhuleni metro is unable to announce an official date for reopening.

The Bunny Park closed on March 1, 2017, for the revamp, which cost the metro R30-million. In previous articles published by the City Times, Themba Gadebe, spokesperson for the metro, said they committed in 2017 to restore the Bunny Park as one of the metro’s main recreational facilities.

“A date for reopening will be announced once processes are complete,” he said.

Capacity issues causing power outages

The metro is addressing capacity issues, following recent power outages that left many suburbs in the dark.

Gadebe explained the power outage which occurred on October 24 was due to the failure of the 132kV XLPE cable between the Benburg and Northmead substations, which affected parts of Northmead and Farrarmere.

“The power outage lasted for about 12 hours due to challenges in reconfiguring the network feed to the affected areas.”

He added that the second outage that occurred on the same weekend, affecting Northmead, was due to the failure of the 11kV cable that feeds the northern distribution centre’s substations.

“Two more faults were identified and repairs started the same night and were completed the following day,” he said.
Illegal building

Property owners served with notice

Two property owners in Mackenzie Park were recently served with contravention notices for building on municipal land, which is illegal.

According to Gadebe, both owners are expected to take remedial action within 60 days from the date of when the notice was issued.

Residents are encouraged to report illegal building on municipal property to the Ekurhuleni call centre on 086 054 3000.
