Diabetes Awareness Day with the Benoni Lakes Lions

According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), 50 per cent of people with type two diabetes are unaware they have the disease.

The Benoni Lakes Lions will be running a Diabetes Awareness Day on November 28 from 9am until 3pm at the Rynfield Pharmacy, Cnr Miles Sharp and Struben street.

Founded in 1917, the club is best known for fighting blindness, but also volunteers for many different kinds of community projects, including caring for the environment, feeding the hungry and aiding seniors and the disabled.

They will be offering the following:

• Free blood sugar level tests

• Free blood pressure checks

• Free eye screening, using their spot vision screener.

A mask will be given to anyone who does any of the tests.

According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), 50 per cent of people with type two diabetes are unaware they have the disease.

Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness in adults.

This is a growing problem as the number of people living with diabetes increases so does the number of people with impaired vision.

Diabetes can cause a disease of the eye called diabetic retinopathy (DR).

In its early stages, you may not notice any symptoms or changes to your eyesight, and you cannot tell that this condition is damaging your eyes.

If it is not detected and treated in a timely manner, your vision can be damaged permanently.

They will be selling boerewors rolls, Lions Christmas Cakes as well as a number of items that can be used as stocking fillers.

They will also have a mini gift wrapping stall on the day.

Members of the public are encouraged to come along and meet them.
