What to know when adopting livestock from SPCA

Kristin Luttig, an employee at the Benoni SPCA, explained that all livestock adopted has to be looked after like they are part of the family.

The Benoni SPCA is mostly associated with the adoption of dogs and cats; however, the organisation also has a variety of livestock up for adoption.

Just like all pets, the adoption process is very strict with specific requirements that need to be met to ensure livestock find good homes.

The following is not permitted when adopting livestock:

• The animal may not be slaughtered.

• The animal will not be used for breeding.

• No breeding should occur on the property.

• Animal cannot be used for entertainment purposes.

All animals need a second chance and by adopting livestock you can give that animal a better life

The application process:

• How many animals are there on the property?

• Have they been sterilised?

• Applicants’ occupation

• What the animal will be used for

A home check will be conducted by an employee from the SPCA to ensure that the living conditions are conducive for the animal to stay.

Costs for adopting livestock are:

• Horse: R1 000

• Cow: R1 000)

• Sheep: R500

• Donkey: R500

• Chicken: R50.
