Ekurhuleni metro warns residents of tender scam

The solid and toxic waste removal tender scam is being perpetuated by a person claiming to be an employee of the metro.

The Ekurhuleni metro warns the public to be aware of an ongoing tender scam for the removal, cleaning and rehabilitation of illegally dumped non-toxic, non-objectionable solid waste and rubble on an as-and-when-required basis.

The solid and toxic waste removal tender scam is being perpetuated by a person claiming to be an employee of the metro.

Themba Gadebe. spokesperson of the metro. said that they have been inundated with complaints from potential service providers who are receiving calls from the scammer soliciting money to purportedly fast track their tender application.

“The scammer who claims to be involved in tender process, lures applicants to a meeting with an aim to discuss their tender application, and recite their personal information contained in their applications to gain their trust.”

The metro informs all tender applicants that applications for the removal, cleaning and rehabilitation of illegally dumped non-toxic, non-objectionable solid waste and rubble on an as and when required basis are handled and processed free of charge.

The following pointers provided below may assist to differentiate scammers from legit communication by the metro:

• The name of the City is City of Ekurhuleni, not Ekurhuleni Municipality;
• Landlines in the City have the 999 prefix;
• The email address for staff is: persons’name.surname@ekurhuleni.gov.za and not XXX@ekurhuleni-gov.org or any other variation.

“The metro urges companies and individuals to be very vigilant and to verify information on the website (www.ekurhuleni.gov.za),” he said.

The public is encouraged to report fraud and corruption on 0800 102 201.
