How Curro Serengeti is adapting to online learning and Covid-19

In the primary school at Curro Serengeti we strive to be the school of choice in our area, and the broader community, by offering quality education for all our learners.

In the primary school at Curro Serengeti we strive to be the school of choice in our area, and the broader community, by offering quality education for all our learners. All religions are respected and recognised at our school, however, we promote and are governed by a Christian ethos of strong ethics, morals, and values. We equip our learners from Grade R with the relevant, age-appropriate 21st-century skills that they can implement to function effectively in our daily environment and in life, and at the same time we prepare them for jobs that don’t yet exist.

We practise a holistic approach to education by offering not only an effective academic programme, but also an extensive sports and cultural programme whereby every child is encouraged to participate each term. We embrace the use of technology in the classroom in order to enhance teaching and learning by means of tablet teaching in the Intersen phase coupled with robotics and computer skills from Grade R. We embrace diversity in the school and assist every child to reach his/her full potential.

Our learners feel safe and nurtured at school and are disciplined in a positive manner. Our learners are taught age-appropriate accountability for any negative behaviour that may tarnish the image of our school or that is in breach of our code of conduct. All our teaching staff are fully qualified, and languages and Mathematics teachers are specialists in their fields.

Intervention structures are implemented by the teachers for learners who are experiencing certain learning barriers. On-site speech, remedial and occupational therapists are available. We offer state-of-the-art facilities which include a hockey AstroTurf, three rugby fields, two soccer fields, three cricket pitches, six cricket nets, eight netball and tennis courts, an indoor heated pool, five buses that are used to transport learners to and from school, two computer and robotics labs, a media centre, an auditorium which caters for 3 000 people and a mini hall as well as a training centre.

We offer a home-away-from-home aftercare centre for all primary school learners which offers a hot meal and snacks daily, a secure area monitored by CCTV cameras, supervised homework by the teachers, friendly, nurturing staff who are all trained in basic first aid, two homework rooms to cater for the use of tablets, a fully equipped playground and an exciting school holiday programme.
