The world is a cruel place

Peter Bachtis writes:

Sleeping under the stars, walking the streets, hands outstretched, looking for a couple of rand … this has been the life of Karelkie and George for many years.

Their clothes worn by the passage of time, their weather-beaten faces belying the pain and heartache of having no one to give them a hand.

Still they rise from their slumber every morning … no bathroom, no kitchen, nothing … just an empty void. Then they hit the streets because they have nothing else to do.

Karelkie was once a policeman and an aspiring boxer and George worked as a retailer.

Somewhere along the way they lost their will to function normally and now they have learnt to take abuse from intolerant people who cross their paths.

An insignificant story, yet every intersection has a Karelkie and a George, people with outstretched hands, trying to survive that day.

The world is cruel.
