Overgrown veld a growing concern for Rynfield residents

Residents of Honiball Street, Rynfield, are fed-up with illegal dumping, vagrants and crime in the area

The City Times visited a site in Rynfield to investigate numerous complaints about the state of a veld between Honiball Street and Pretoria Road.

Not only has it become an eyesore to the residents and motorists passing by, but residents claim crime has escalated drastically and those who have been living in the area for years have never felt more unsafe.

They place the blame at the foot of contractors who worked on Pretoria Road and who dumped broken tar, road cones and other rubble in the veld. Along with a lack of maintenance of the veld by the metro, the area has now also become home to vagrants.

One resident said they have been held up in their home by armed robbers and they are all concerned about a general increase in crime.

They also said the area has become a commonly used site for illegal dumping; they’ve seen bakkies offloading rubble illegally.

Their complaints have apparently fallen on deaf ears at the metro.
