Benoni SAPS reports positive Covid-19 case

The station was temporarily closed again on June 22 so that members who had not been tested could do so.

The Benoni Police Station was closed on June 17 after one of their members recently tested positive for Covid-19.
The station was re-opened on June 18.
Gauteng SAPS spokesperson Col Noxolo Kweza confirmed that a Benoni SAPS member tested positive for the coronavirus.

“The station premises was decontaminated, while members who have come into contact with the positive member were screened and tested,” said Kweza. She also confirmed that there was a positive case at the Putfontein SAPS.

Benoni SAPS station commander Brig Ntakuseni Lukhwareni confirmed the station was temporarily closed again on June 22 so that members who had not been tested could do so.

“Those who were off duty were called to work. The station was reopened and staff who have tested positive are not at work,” he said.

A member of staff contacted the City Times last week to raise concerns about the way management were  communicating and managing positive cases.

The employee, who asked to remain anonymous, said they had found out there were at least six positive cases at the station among staff and that those who had been in contact with infected people were sent for testing but told to return to work immediately if their tests were negative.

On June 22, the same employee told the City Times they had become aware of positive cases in the charge office and that the CSC was closed.
