‘Scrap’ chickens, geese put out of their misery after SPCA raid on Mapleton depot

The Boksburg SPCA will lay charges of animal cruelty against the owner of the facility for allowing the prolonged suffering of these animals while in his possession

Accompanied by staff from the Benoni and Brakpan SPCAs, the Boksburg SPCA executed a warrant to enter and seize all sick or injured animals at a chicken depot in Mapleton, Boksburg, last week.

The raid came after a routine inspection of the facility revealed severe neglect to the animals on site. Broken wings and legs, dehydration, parasite infestation, septic wounds and filthy living conditions were only some of the welfare problems encountered.

According to Vicky Finnemore, Boksburg SPCA manager, the chickens sold at this facility are branded as scrap because of their debilitated condition and are therefore sold at a reduced price.

“The scrap are then delivered in daily truckloads and are violently mishandled when on and offloaded.” she explained. “Geese delivered to the depot are handled the same way. Battered and bruised, the birds are then sold for consumption.”

Just under 100 chickens and geese were seized and had to be euthanased after inspected by a veterinarian.
