Escaped springbok found in Rynfield

The adventurous animal belongs to Ebotse and was safely returned to its home

It seemed like a normal Friday morning for former Benoni SPCA manager, Vicky Finnemore, until she saw a springbok run past her car on Struben Street.

“I was driving with my son and we saw the springbok running across the road.”

Finnemore may be working for the Boksburg SPCA and was off duty, but still ensured she secured the animal in an enclosed area for the Benoni SPCA to pick up.

The animal ran into the parking lot of the centre on Miles Sharp Street.

WATCH:

The Benoni SPCA and Bapsfontein Animal Hospital were then called to ensure the situation was handled with delicacy.

“I was notified around 7.30am,” said Benoni SPCA inspector, Serra Gouriet.

A staff member of Ebotse said they noticed the springbok had escaped around 11pm.

Dr Nadene Nagel and her team from the animal hospital were on scene to ensure that the animal was gently and safely tranquilised to be transported and returned to its home, which they successfully did.

Dr Nadene Nagel jumps into the SPCA van to help the tranquilised springbok.

In the presence of bystanders, Nagel shot the dart and her team carried the springbok into the Benoni SPCA van.
