Benoni SPCA filled with animals after fireworks

The Animal Guardians on Cloverdene Road had eight reclaims while two animals are still at the organisation.

Animal rescue organisations were kept busy on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day following fireworks that went off which have a bad effect on animals in the area.

Benoni SPCA’s chairperson Shelley Owens said they have been very busy with a full intake of animals and about 25 animals remained at the SPCA.

“A few came looking as soon as they knew their pets were missing and collected them,” she said.

The Animal Guardians on Cloverdene Road had eight reclaims while two animals are still at the organisation.

Director Annalise Jungmann said the fireworks were bad, not only for the animals, but for the organisation.

Zalita Laas from Purple Red Paws in Zestfontein said there were no fireworks in the area and the animals were not as scared as they were last year.

She added that they could not take in any animals as they were filled to the brim.

“We went out on a few emergency calls, but it was not as bad as it was last year,” said Laas.
