Illegal dumping remains a challenge in Actonville

The dirt build-up reaches stormwater drains and creates a bigger issue with dirty water flowing onto the roads.

Ward 29 Clr Imtiaz Loonat is concerned over the copious amounts of illegal dumping taking place in Actonville.

“Illegal dumping is a serious issue in Actonville and we want to educate the people in this regard,” said Loonat.

“The dumping takes place in open places, such as the sports complexes and even the outskirts of the area.

“Shopkeepers who are not familiar with the by-laws are exacerbating the matter especially in the business area.

Clr Imtiaz Loonat said building rubble is also being dumped illegally.

“Refuse collection takes place six days a week.

“Instead of taking out the dirt the night before, take it out in the morning for refuse collection.

“By taking it out the night before, it is encouraging others to pile their dirt there.

“Hawkers outside the shops also throw their dirt into the pile and sometimes stray animals rummage through the dirt that is lying around.

“The dirt build-up reaches stormwater drains and creates a bigger issue with dirty water flowing onto the roads.

“If for some reason the refuse removal does not take place on a certain day, the place looks terrible.

“Despite the availability of skips and a dumping site on the corner of Loonat and Daya streets, people still dump their refuse on the streets.

“I am urging community members in the area to stop illegal dumping, and we should name and shame those responsible for this.

“If you see someone committing this offence, take a picture and send it to me.

“Together, we will name and shame them on social media.”

Loonat can be contacted on 082 560 8293.
