Protea stages Wizard of Oz production

A 10 per cent discount will apply for a table of 10 people.

Months of preparation, close to 30 cast members, an adaptation to the original script and surprise twists are all part of the spectacular The Musical Adventures with the Wizard of Oz that is being staged at Tom Newby School in Airfield by the award-winning Protea Stage Productions.

Running from November 15 to 24, the musical, which is directed by Carole Worrel, is set to capture the hearts of audiences as it attracts crowds of all ages.

“The Wizard of Oz production has been in my mind for about two years now,” said Carole.

“My husband Mark has wanted to play the lion for the longest time and the script was adapted by my daughter Pheobe who has done a wonderful job with bringing even more characters and songs to life.

“We are very grateful to all our cast and crew members, as well as the families who come out to support their loved ones in the production from the onset.

“We practice for around seven to eight hours a week.

“It is an amateur society, but we put on professional shows.

“A lot of people do not realise just how much effort and time goes into a production that includes creating and preparing props and other associated items at our warehouse.

“Members of Protea, like Barry Neuwerth and our chairperson Bob Stone, have been with the society for over 20 years and play instrumental roles in ensuring the productions go off smoothly.

“Tom Newby School is also very accommodating every time we put on a production.”

Shows will run from 7.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays, with afternoon shows at 2.30pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Ticket prices for the show are R80 for adults and R50 for children and pensioners.
