EMPD seizes illegal mining equipment and explosives

All the confiscated equipment was booked in at Benoni Police Station.

The EMPD Specialised Services, consisting of Equestrian, K9, SWAT, Public Order Policing and Drug Enforcement units, conducted an illegal mining operation on June 18 from 8am until 11am.

The operation was conducted at the illegal mining area along New Modder Road and next to the N12 freeway by the Putfontein off-ramp in pursuit of illegal miners.

EMPD spokesperson Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago said although the illegal miners disappeared into the shafts, numerous items of equipment used to mine illegally were seized; their illegally erected tents and structures were demolished.

Illegal mining equipment, including seven explosive sticks with seven detonator cords, 14 phendukas, five crusher pots, eight steel rods, two five-pound hammers, two spades, two chisels and one bottle containing mercury, were seized.

All the confiscated equipment was booked in at Benoni Police Station.
