Don’t leave your valuables in the car when out shopping

Prepare your journey by packing all your valuables where they’re safe before you leave either from work to home or vice versa.

The Benoni police are concerned about the persistent theft out of motor vehicles especially in shopping centres.

This comes after a recent increase in reported cases at the station.

Benoni SAPS acting Vispol head Col Papa Matsie said these incidents mostly occur in parking areas and in some shopping complexes and malls.

“The community must work with the police and report any suspicious activities,” said Matsie.

“Criminals are opportunists. People must try hard not to create an opportunity for criminals to commit a crime.”

Matsie said this sort of crime is a concern as people tend to be victims by leaving their valuables in full view of potential criminals, hiding their belongings inside their vehicle in full public view.

“We also advise shopping centres to consider installing cameras in the parking lots,” he said.

“The community is requested not to leave valuable items such as laptops, cameras, cellphones, clothes etc on the seats or where criminals can easily gain access.”

Matsie said there are a lot of common robberies on Voortrekker and Tom Jones streets and Princes Avenue.

He said the culprits, who are usually in pairs or threes, carry knives or firearms.

The acting Vispol head provided the following tips for residents to reduce their chances of falling victim to common robbery:

• Do not have your cellphone in your hand when walking in the street.

• Always be vigilant and aware of your surroundings.

• If you are attacked, do not resist. Look at the robbers so that you can later identify them.

Spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said following a robbery incident involving a couple on May 11, at Danie Taljaard Park, police warn residents not to visit the park.

“The couple was fishing when they were suddenly approached by five men who threatened them with a firearm,” said Sekele.

The suspects took the couple’s cellphones, sunglasses, a watch, ring and jackets.

Sekele added that the park is no longer a safe area and it is a hotspot for criminals.

“We would like to alert residents not to visit the park,” she said.

She, however, also said that the police will monitor the park.

Matsie added that he has a dedicated crime prevention team that will continue to fight crime in Benoni.
