Voting hours extended to accommodate Sabbath

The decision to extend voting hours at these missions followed a request from the South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD) to accommodate Jewish voters who will be celebrating the Sabbath on April 26 and 27.

To ensure free and fair elections, the Electoral Commission of South Africa has agreed to extend voting hours on April 27 at four foreign missions to accommodate Jewish voters celebrating the Sabbath.

Voting will be extended at the following missions:

• London: 7am to 11.30pm

• Tel Aviv: 7am to 11.30pm

• Los Angeles: 7am to 11pm

• New York: 7am to 11pm

The SAJBD recommended the four missions for extended voting hours based on estimations of the missions most likely to be frequented by Jewish voters.

The Commission previously announced that it would allow Muslim voters to apply for special votes at voting stations on May 6 and 7 (9am to 5pm) should they choose to due to the anticipated start of the holy month of Ramadan on May 8.
