The Salvation Army receives a new washing machine

The Salvation Army are still in need of many necessities.

Excitement ran high at The Salvation Army in Howard Avenue on April 17, when a new washing machine was donated to them by the Benoni Lions Club.

“We are overwhelmed and so grateful for the machine,” said Antonette Grobler, assistant centre manager, and major Jeffrey Stafford of The Salvation Army.

“Having two washing machines will enable us to do more for those we provide help and support to – this donation is God-sent.”

Their current washing machine is nearly 10 years old and in need of some TLC.

“We need another tumble dryer as well,” Antonette said.

Benoni Lions Club president Diane Crompton said the club often supports The Salvation Army and the washing machine was one of their wishlist items.

Jeffrey explained that The Salvation Army caters for between 50 and 55 people, including 25 pensioners, 23 children in a crèche (on the premises) and the rest are unemployed adults 21 and older.

Their new washing machine is a Speed Queen coin-operated machine, which requires R5 per wash.

The money generated from the use of the machine will be used to maintain it and buy the products needed to wash clothing.

The Salvation Army is also in need of the following:

• roof paint and roof maintenance

• television, open-view decoder and satellite for pensioners

• toiletries

• spreads for bread

• tinned food

• food for soup kitchen

• blankets

Any donations which cannot be used at The Salvation Army will be put in their charity shop to be sold.
