There is no gravel on the road, only sand which has turned into mud due to the recent rains.

Residents are completely frustrated with the fact that they cannot access their own driveways due to the road conditions on Patten Road in Benoni AH.

The conditions come as a result of construction to fix the water line on the road, which began four weeks ago.

Samantha Coetzee, a resident living on Patten Road, said: “Construction has been going on for four weeks, but this is a sand road, I’ve been living here for 19 years and it has never gotten better.

“We have to pull cars out of the mud on a daily basis, we recently blocked the road for over 45 minutes after I got stuck in the mud, my neighbours’ clutch burnt out while trying to help me, then another neighbour also got stuck trying to get us out, we then insisted the Tractor-Loader-Backhoe on-site help pull us out.”

There are three schools around the area and parents had to find an alternative route to take their children to school.

André and Meisie Deal own a party hire venue on their premises and for the past four weeks they had to cancel parties as the conditions of the road is not favourable for people to drive on towards the party venue. They are disheartened by not knowing when they can open their business again.

Stephan van Wyk said his children, who drive smaller cars, were not able to leave the driveway for over a month and he has to drive them to school. He also mentioned that it has been hard to run his home-based logistics company as the road is getting worse to drive on.

According to the residents, the refuse removal truck has not come to their street for the last three weeks and they have to get rid of the waste themselves.

Samantha mentioned the Department of Health and Sanitation visited the site and they have made contact with their ward councillor to have a look, but the meeting was cancelled.

The completion of the road has not been confirmed.
