Vegetable garden at Noorderlig to feed the hungry

Volunteers who can assist in cleaning the open field at the school are needed.

Learners at Noorderlig Gekombineerde Skool will benefit from a vegetable garden that will be set up by non-profit company Remagine Nation.

The company will convert an unused open field at the school into a garden that will assist in the feeding and funding of 42 underprivileged learners.

Andi Mulder, co-founder and director of Remagine Nation, said learners will be taught gardening skills which they can use to uplift and invest back into their community.

“The biggest challenge we face with school feeding schemes is that most underprivileged children find it degrading to stand in lines for food handouts,” said Mulder.

“So, when the learners volunteer in the garden they will earn credits they can use to purchase meals from the school’s tuck shop.”

Mulder explained through the project, 30 per cent of the vegetables grown the school will use to make meals, 10 per cent will be donated to other organisation or needy community members in the area, 50 per cent will be sold at local markets to help fund the learners and 10 per cent will be harvested for seeds.

He added this project aims to uplift the community and once it grows it will be taken to other schools on the East Rand.

Remagine Nation co-founder and director Clint Vorster said the company needs volunteers who can assist in cleaning the open field at the school.

“We also need seeds, seedlings, gardening equipment and financial assistance,” said Vorster.

Noorderlig Gekombineerde Skool principal Frikkie Smith said the garden will make a difference to the learners.

“Our school is identified by the department as a Quintile Four school, which states we cater for the least poor, so we don’t have a feeding scheme and we have no funds to start our own,” said Smith.

“This project will really help the school as some of our learners come to school hungry and will be able to assist all the learners in need.”

Smith said this will also enable the learners to learn a skill they can use to provide for themselves as the unemployment rate is very high in the country.
