Benoni SAPS warns learners against robbers

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said no incidents have been reported to the police.

The Benoni police are asking learners to be careful to avoid falling victim to common robberies.

According to a local WhatsApp crime group, it is alleged that an Indian man and woman, driving a gold BMW 3 Series with no number plates, are targeting learners in the Northmead area.

It is alleged that the woman asks to use a learner’s cellphone and then runs off and jumps back into the vehicle with the phone and the pair drive off.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said no incidents have been reported to the police.

“We urge anyone who has been a victim of any criminal activity to report this to police immediately for investigation,” said Sekele.

The spokesperson provided the following tips for learners and residents to reduce their chances of falling victim to common robbery:

• Do not have your cellphone in your hand when walking in the street.

• Always be vigilant and aware of your surroundings.

• Don’t talk to strangers.

• If you are targeted, do not resist, but try to get a good look at the perpetrators so they can be identified later.
