Scholarships for bright Benoni learners

The duo can now look forward to making their dreams of obtaining tertiary educations a reality.

After a stringent selection and interview process, two Benonians recently bagged the Peermont Education Trust (PET) scholarships valued at R170 000 each.

The youngsters, Lindokuhle Sithole and Naomi Monareng, journeyed through the process and received their official scholarship letters at an induction function at the Palace of Dreams recently.

Lindokuhle, who matriculated from Lefa-Ifa Secondary School in KwaThema with four distinctions, in mathematics, geography, life sciences and physical science, is heading to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) to start his actuarial sciences degree.

Naomi, who matriculated from Masithwalisane Secondary School with seven distinctions, in life orientation, Sepedi, English, mathematics, civil technology, engineering graphics and design and physical science, will be joining Sithole at Wits where she will be doing a Bachelor of Science degree.

“Over the years we have found that we are able to increase our graduation rate by offering learners additional support throughout the year,” said Peermont Education Trust manager, Jenny Findlay.

“To this end, the trust has an impressive 85 per cent graduation rate.

“This is exceptional considering that the learners hail from township schools, where the national graduation rate is 22 per cent.”

Apart from having their tuition and accommodation expenses covered, getting their books and a laptop sponsored, the trust also provides a comprehensive mentorship programme for scholarship recipients to enable them to cope and develop new skills during their time at university.

The programme covers study skills and emotional intelligence.

Monthly mentorship meetings are held with the learners to ensure they receive the much-needed socio-psychological support required.

The trust, in its 18th year of operation, has produced 123 graduates to date with 99 per cent of these learners getting job placements at well-known companies such as Netcare, Alexander Forbes, de Loittes, FNB and Nedbank and Group 5.

With the new and existing scholarship recipients, the PET will fund a total of 22 learners this year.
