Third vervet caught and in good condition

The third vervet is safe and sound.

The third vervet roaming Benoni was caught in a garden in Smith Street, Rynfield, on January 16 at around midday and is said to be in brilliant condition.

This is according to Vanessa Davis, a volunteer at the South African Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre (SAWRC), who added the male will no doubt easily integrate with the two females which were caught a few weeks ago.

“Rynfield residents Duane and Petro Pretorius made their garden available to us after we found out the vervet had a particular fondness for their grapevine and plum tree,” she said.

SAWRC is extremely relieved that the male vervet is now safe from traffic, dogs and those threatening to harm it.

The vervet was taken to the Ithumela Primate Sanctuary, outside Pretoria, and placed under the care of Dr Martie Koen, who specialises in vervets and bushbabies.

“The three vervets captured in Benoni will have other stragglers added to their growing troop until they are sufficient in numbers to function properly as a unit once released,” Davis said.

Vanessa caught the first female vervet in Marister early December and the second was caught in Fairleads on January 8.
