A seminar for grieving spouses

Some of the ideas presented in Loss of a Spouse are based on Christian principles.

A GriefShare seminar focusing on the loss of a spouse will soon take place at Northfield Methodist Church’s The Well.

According to GriefShare leader Denise Heatlie, the journey of grief after the loss of a spouse is not what any surviving spouse would want.

“While life will never be the same after the death of a spouse, help is available through this seminar,” Denise.

“It is aimed at helping grievers process their grief and think about what life after the loss of a spouse might look like and how to face the future with a measure of hope.”

Denise reiterated, however, that even if people practice a different faith, don’t believe in God or feel distant from God, the seminar can still be of value, regardless of their perspective on religion.

The programme consists of a video which includes advice from counsellors and pastors (most of whom have lost a spouse) and stories from men and women who’ve been widowed and have found help and encouragement.

“They share honestly about topics such as what to expect in the days after the loss, the surprising emotional, physical and spiritual effects of grief, challenges that surviving spouses face – such as loneliness, new household responsibilities and relating to others – why it won’t always hurt this much and possibilities for hope in life.

An informative booklet is also handed out to participants.

Venue: The Well, Northfield Methodist Church, Aerodrome Drive, Airfield.

Date: January 26

Time: 10am to noon.
