Farrarmere residents band together for charitable cause

Collections will run until December 20.

Recently, retailer Pick n Pay gave shoppers the opportunity to receive a R5 voucher, in the form of a sticker, for every R150 spent at their tills.

Upon reaching 20 of these stickers, shoppers would receive R100 of their purchase.

According to Farrarmere resident Catherine Marques, a resident on the Farrarmere WhatsApp group suggested members with loose stickers to band together to fill some cards for charitable causes.

“The response was amazing with resident Graham Walker stepping up and offering to help with the collection of all the stickers,” said Marques.

“Farrarmere resident Janie Kuit, who is on the board of Greater Child Welfare Benoni (GBCW), requested that the cards go to GBCW as they have not received their grant from the government, and are running out of funds.

“Graham filled 15 cards and collected R200 in cash donations.

“On Monday, November 26, Janie delivered R1 800 worth of vouchers and R200 to the Child Welfare, a total of R2 000.

“In addition, a collection for a needy local family took place.”

Marques added that two of the residents felt a plea for help on the chat group had been ignored and donated their own full cards to this family.

Elsie Labuschagne, director of GBCW, said the support from the public came at a time when they needed it most.

“We are very thankful for the donation and this will help us a lot,” said the director.

“We will be using the cards to buy groceries for the child and youth centre.”

Marquez said Benoni residents from other suburbs who may want to donate their stickers can leave their loose stickers in the post box at 14 Wordsworth Street, Farrarmere (opposite the Baptist Church), for the Child Welfare.

“There is no need to ring the bell as the post box will be monitored,” said a helpful Marques.

“Those who wish to donate to the Benoni SPCA can drop their stickers off in the post box at 8 Vaal Road, Farrarmere (opposite JH Snyman Park).”
