Waste management company EnviroServ has spent more than R3-million in 2018 helping 73 unemployed youth around the country enter the working world by sponsoring their studies through a learnership.
In Gauteng, 16 unemployed learners from Etwatwa, Sundra and Holfontein were selected to join the learnership programme. Thirteen completed the Business Administration Level two and three programmes and moved to the Generic Management Level four and five employed learners programmes.
The Generic Management level four and five programmes were implemented for employees nationally.

This provided the foundations of management, which targeted employees in the team leader, supervisor and manager roles.
Five learners successfully completed the qualification while the other seven are currently submitting their POEs (Portfolio of Evidence).
EnviroServ group training manager Neville Moopanar said learnerships were key to addressing skills that were scarce and critical within the organisation,
industry or sector, thereby contributing to employability.
“Learnerships equip learners with both theoretical and workplace-learning interventions that lead to occupationally based qualifications that are registered with the South African Qualifications Authority,” he said.
The sponsorships cost around R45 000 per learner and include all training costs, trainer fees, stationery, stipend and catering for the year.
After three months of theoretical training, some of the learners are placed at EnviroServ offices nationally.
“Due to the high volume of learners recruited, EnviroServ formed strategic partnerships with local schools, libraries and councillor officers who have opened their doors and provided learners with an opportunity to obtain work experience for a further nine months.”
Moopanar said when asking young unemployed persons what held them back from entering the job market, the resounding response was employers requiring people with experience.
“Our learnership programme, therefore, ensures young people have a sound academic foundation as well as valuable work experience, making them viable candidates for employment.”
