Actonville Child Welfare incurs minus R60 188 deficit
Another concern raised by house members was the amount of time social workers spent in court which impacted directly on fuel consumption costs as well as time. This, they noted, was not unique to their society as many mitigating factors added to time spent in court.
The AGM for the Actonville Child and Family Welfare Society (ACFWS) was held at the premises on November 24.
The ACFWS is responsible for providing social work to families in Actonville, Mackenzie Park, Wattville (and surrounding areas), Kingsway and Lindelani.
Treasurer Samad Mayet discussed financials which showed a lower deficit incurred by the society at minus R60 188 as opposed to the previous year’s minus R195 192.
To add to this, Mayet announced that the society recently received Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) status which entails preferential tax treatment by the taxman.

Fund-raising, according to chairperson Hoosain Shirkhot, was one of the biggest concerns for the organisation as reserves, he indicated, were running low and a venue is required to host fund-raising events.
Chief social worker Sadia Patel noted that the privacy of clients in the Kingsway satellite office, due to limited
space, was under threat.
The office is a container located at Kingsway Intermediate School.
A new venue was discussed with,according to Shirkot, a resolution being looked into.
Patel said a challenge faced was foster families receiving extensions on grants as the process which includes form 30s (way of knowing if an individual is a sexual offender or not) and adverts to be placed in the newspaper by the Department of Social Development fell short.
Elections for a vice-chairperson and chairperson would be conducted early next year as voted for by the house.
Shirkot extended an invitation to the youth in the community to take a stand of leadership at the society.
“I invite all members of the public to join us, especially the youth,” he said.
“We will be here to guide and support them. Having younger members shows great initiative from our youth to shoulder responsibilities that will also enable them to grow as individuals.”
Shirkot thanked those present at the meeting.
“In a time of corruption and greed, it is heartening to see people come forth for no benefit of their own but to serve the communities.”
Renewal of employee contracts and working conditions concluded the meeting’s agenda.
