Metro explains water flow on Actonville streets

Ismail said she reported potholes as a result of the water damage.

A water leak in Ally Street, from Lahore Court in Actonville, was recently reported to the City Times.

According to Ward 29 councillor Haseena Ismail, since the metro cleaned a drain in Lahore Court, water flows from an outlet pipe onto the road.

“This is a major problem as there is water lying stagnant on the road and this is causing a major health risk to residents and it is damaging the roads,” said Ismail.

“I am awaiting a report back from the department on how this matter is going to be properly addressed.

“The water flows from Lahore Court into Ally Street, Mistry Street and down to Singh Street.

“The Department of Roads and Transport attended to the issue but the potholes opened up again as there is continuous water flowing on the road.

“This is really unacceptable that this matter has been reported many times yet nothing has been done on the ground.

“Residents are paying for rates and services and they deserve better services from the municipality.”

Spokesperson for Ekurhuleni Temba Gadebe said two contractors were sent to the site to investigate the matter and concluded the water that is in the road is not from a leaking pipe.

“It (water) comes from the stormwater drain in the middle of the complex,” explained Gadebe.

“The drain was designed to run out into the road down to the stormwater drain at the end of that road.

“Aloe Court was designed in the same manner.

“All the rainwater and water from the washing at the complex accumulates in the drains in the centre of these complexes and thus runs in a series of pipes to the road which in turn runs to the council main stormwater drains.”
